If you take a flight that is over eight hours long, or go on a long journey by bus, car or train, you could run the risk of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) or even a pulmonary ebolism occurring. You should consult your doctor if you have already suffered from deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism, if you are pregnant, have recently had a baby or undergone surgery, are overweight, are having hormone treatment or have had cancer….
Wear comfortable clothes that do not constrict your legs and are not tight round your waist or your ankles.
Do not stow your hand baggage under your feet – that will restrict your ability to move.
Try to book an aisle seat.
Move around on your seat to change your sitting position and if necessary walk up and down the aisle.
It helps to wear support stockings or socks.
Don’t forget to drink a lot (water).
