UNESCO has added Portugal’s Fado (popular urban songs) to its Intangible Heritage List. The roots of Fado lie in Lisbon’s popular districts and express indescribable feelings of nostalgia (saudade). Fado is a solo sung by a man or woman accompanied by a Portuguese 12-stringed guitar (gitarra) and a “violao“ (Spanish guitar). The texts are very sensitive and are on the theme of love, longing and topics of everyday life.
