Emergency lane on motorways

From 1 January 2012, Austria has introduced a compulsory measure whereby drivers must make room for a central emergency lane in the event of a traffic jam or an accident to give the police and emergency services speedier access to trouble spots. For roads that only have two lanes in either direction, vehicles must move to the outermost lane (traffic in the left lane moves left and in the right lane moves right) to free up a lane in the middle. Anyone who blocks or drives down the emergency lane risks being fined up to €2,180.
