In the case of minor accidents insurance companies will accept a report made out jointly by the drivers concerned. However it should contain the same details as a police report. It is best to use the European Accident Report that is available from motor vehicle insurers free of charge.
Five tips, about what should always appear in the report:
1) Vehicle registration number of the other driver involved.
2) Name and address of the other driver concerned. Ask to see his/her identity papers and note down the name of his/her insurance company and the policy number.
3) Time and place of the accident.
4) Names and addresses of any witnesses.
5) You can never be too sure: Where possible, take photos of the scene of the accident from different angles. Draw a sketch of the accident.
6) Very important: Inform your own insurance company as soon as possible. Never ever admit responsibility.
