A new generation of seatbelts is ready to hit the market. They offer greater safety because they have an airbag function and inflate in a flash if there is a collision. A self-inflating seatbelt offers special protection to passengers seated in the rear of a vehicle. “Guinea pigs“ who have tried them claim that they are very comfortable to wear.
As to how it works, it is classic seatbelt sensor technology that triggers a release of gas causing the seat belt to expand in a trice to three times its size. Thus potential injury to the rib cage is prevented.
